Social media images can shape expectations about cupping marks. Here is how to keep the focus on your goals, comfort and daily function instead.
Cupping marks photograph well, which is partly why they appear so often on social media and in sports coverage. Because they are so visible, it can seem easy to judge cupping from a picture. In reality, the colour depends on many factors, including skin type, suction strength and how long the cups stay in place. Chasing darker marks is not a useful goal.
If social media has shaped your expectations, Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, can talk them through with you at the Lane Cove clinic before a first session.
Settling these questions before any cups are applied keeps the session focused on your needs rather than on how your back might look afterwards.
When you next see Christine, talk about how comfortable the session felt and whether everyday movements have changed, such as reaching overhead or sitting through a long drive. Skin colour is not a verdict. It is one small observation among many.
Pick a single task, like hanging out washing, as your yardstick before the first session, and note afterwards how quickly the skin returned to normal. Deciding whether to go on means returning to why you came, what changed for you and what other choices exist. If your GP is involved in managing the problem, they may appreciate an update too.
Every decision about cupping should begin and end with you, not with a photograph. If you are unsure whether cupping is worth trying, book a conversation at the Lane Cove clinic first. Christine can explain the process, discuss any health factors that might make it unsuitable and give you room to decide without pressure.
