Feeling Cold or Tired? Why Moxibustion Is Not a Default Routine

8:07 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Traditional theory describes when moxibustion may or may not suit someone. Here is why self-selecting a heat treatment for tiredness is not a good idea.

Tradition is more selective than the trend

Moxibustion is sometimes presented online as a cosy daily ritual for anyone who feels chilly or run-down. Traditional Chinese medicine is actually more selective than that. Classical accounts describe patterns where moxibustion is considered suitable and others where it may not be, so a chilly or weary feeling by itself gives too little to go on when deciding on a heat therapy.

Moxa is only used by Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, once your individual situation has been talked through properly at the Lane Cove clinic. That first conversation is as much part of the care as the session itself.

What to describe at the consultation

  • When the coldness or tiredness began and whether it is new or long-standing.
  • Other changes, such as weight, appetite, sleep, mood or breathlessness.
  • Your general health history and any medicines you take.

Persistent fatigue or unusual coldness can have many causes, some of which need medical tests. Christine may suggest seeing your GP so that possibilities like anaemia or thyroid problems can be checked.

Questions that keep the decision personal

Ask whether moxibustion fits the assessment and what alternatives exist. An individual plan should guide each session, rather than the assumption that a warming practice is always useful whenever energy dips.

Comfort when heat is used

If moxibustion does go ahead, agree on how to signal discomfort and what aftercare you will need. Sensation, skin condition and sensitivity to smoke all matter. Instructions should be tailored to you, not lifted from a wellness blog or a friend's routine.

A sensible starting point

If winter mornings leave you feeling flat and you are curious about traditional approaches, bring that curiosity to an appointment in Lane Cove. Christine can explain how traditional theory views your symptoms, what else may need checking and whether moxibustion has any role at all in your care.
