Cupping Styles Beyond Social Media Photos

7:33 pm 24 October 2026 0 Commenti

Cupping predates social media by centuries, and its different styles describe different procedures. Here is how to keep the focus on your own goals.

A history longer than a hashtag

Many people first noticed cupping when athletes appeared on television with round marks on their shoulders. The practice, however, has a history stretching back many centuries across several cultures. Over that time, different styles have developed. Stationary cupping leaves cups in one place, while moving cupping glides them across oiled skin. Other variations exist too.

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, sees these names as a reason to ask questions about purpose and experience, not as a ranking with one style at the top.

Choosing a goal you can measure

Tell Christine what you would like to do more comfortably. Perhaps turning to check a blind spot while driving, reaching up to hang washing, or getting back to tennis on the weekend. Agree how that goal will be reviewed at your next appointment.

Having a concrete aim keeps the conversation practical and makes it easier to decide whether cupping is worth continuing.

History as background, not instruction

Learning about the traditions behind cupping can be genuinely enriching. Still, what you choose today should rest on your current health, your wishes and the way your body reacts. Mention skin conditions, blood-thinning medicines and any recent injuries before cupping is considered.

  • Ask which style is proposed and why.
  • Check what marks or soreness to expect.
  • Agree how you will signal discomfort.

Following up on what matters

When you return, discuss that everyday activity along with how comfortable the session felt and how your skin recovered. Marks are only one observation; whether to carry on should be guided by your original goal, your response and other options available.

If pain is severe, follows an injury or comes with swelling or numbness, see your GP for assessment first.

Talking about cupping in Lane Cove

Whether your interest started with a sports broadcast or a family tradition, Christine is happy to discuss the background. When you come into the Lane Cove clinic, ask her which style might match your goal and what a session would feel like.
