Meridians and the Neck: A Traditional Chinese View

10:03 am 9 April 2025 Christine Shen 0 Commenti

Why does Chinese medicine talk about wind and cold when your neck feels stiff? A look at the traditional theory, plus everyday care tips, from Lane Cove Acupuncture on Longueville Road.

How classical Chinese medicine reads a stiff neck

Chinese medical texts written many centuries ago already described the stiff neck that greets people after a cold night. In this traditional framework, the body is crossed by meridians, pathways along which Qi and blood are said to move. Several of these channels run across the back and sides of the neck and over the shoulders. When the flow is thought to be obstructed, the traditional view is that stiffness and discomfort follow. We share these ideas as traditional theory, not as medical fact.

Wind and cold as traditional causes

Classical theory names external "pathogenic factors" such as wind and cold. Sleeping beneath an open window, sitting under an air-conditioning vent, or a long day hunched over a computer are the kinds of situations a TCM practitioner might ask about. In modern terms, holding the head still for long periods is a very common reason for muscles to feel tight.

Everyday care

Keep the neck warm

Traditional advice is to protect the neck from draughts with a scarf or collar. Many people also find a warm shower or heat pack comforting. A wrapped cold pack used briefly is another option some prefer. Take care with temperature either way.

Gentle movement

  • Slow shoulder circles in both directions
  • Light squeezes of the shoulder blades, held for a few seconds
  • Easy head turns, staying within comfort

Acupuncture at Lane Cove Healing Centre

Some people choose acupuncture to support their comfort and wellbeing when their neck feels tight. At our rooms in Lane Cove, the practitioner will ask about your sleep, posture and general health before discussing whether treatment may suit you. Acupuncture is offered as a complement to, not a replacement for, medical care.

For those in fertility care

People attending fertility appointments sometimes mention neck and shoulder tension from stress or long waits. If you are undergoing fertility treatment, please let both your specialist and our practitioner know before starting any complementary therapy.

When to see your GP

See your GP if neck pain follows an injury, is severe or worsening, lasts more than a few days, or comes with fever, headache, dizziness, numbness or weakness.
