Heart Rate Variability, Wearables and Acupuncture Visits

7:20 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Heart rate variability on a smartwatch is a clue, not a verdict. Context and how you actually feel make the numbers more meaningful.

One number, many influences

Smartwatches and fitness rings have made heart rate variability, or HRV, a familiar figure for many people. It can be tempting to treat it as a daily score for recovery. Yet HRV moves around with sleep quality, exercise, alcohol, illness, stress, the time of day and even how the device sits on your wrist. One reading on its own says little until you consider the circumstances in which it was taken.

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, is happy to look at tracking data with you, as long as it is read in context.

What a wearable cannot prove

A shift in your HRV after a session is not evidence that acupuncture has repaired your vagus nerve or any other structure. Many factors change at once in daily life, and a device cannot separate them.

If you would like to share your data, also note how you felt, how you slept and what else was going on around those dates. Looking at symptoms and everyday function next to a longer trend gives a far more useful picture than chasing an ideal number from one morning.

Illustrative, Lane Cove: Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, in a yellow dress checks fine needles in a patient's forearm on a bolster.

Agreeing on practical goals

Before treatment, it helps to separate the problem from the outcome you would value. Maybe that is less tension at the end of a workday, a clearer understanding of what is happening, or knowing when it would be sensible to see your GP or a cardiologist. Find out how often your plan would be reassessed and what might cause Christine to alter it.

If your device flags an irregular rhythm, or you notice palpitations, chest pain or breathlessness, see a doctor promptly rather than waiting for an acupuncture visit.

Bringing your data to Lane Cove

Plenty of people on the lower North Shore track their sleep and recovery closely. If that includes you, export a few weeks of data and bring it to the Lane Cove clinic, where Christine can talk through how it fits alongside your symptoms.
