Starting Small When You Seek Psychological Support

8:05 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Seeking psychological support is not a sign of failing to cope. You can start small, ask practical questions and keep control of how much you share.

Waiting until things feel unbearable

Plenty of people hold off on therapy for months or years because asking for help feels like admitting defeat. Health systems and cultures around the world handle mental health very differently, yet the personal question tends to be the same everywhere: what would make support feel easier to approach?

Alongside her acupuncture work, Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, is qualified in psychotherapy and sees clients for talking therapy in Lane Cove. Starting a conversation with her does not require you to have reached a crisis point.

You can begin with one concern

A first session does not have to cover your whole life story. You might describe one recurring difficulty, such as tension at work, arguments at home or a low mood that lingers, and ask how psychological treatment might be relevant. There is no threshold of distress you must prove before you deserve support.

Practical questions that lower the barrier

  • How is my privacy protected, and what are the limits of confidentiality?
  • What are the fees, and how long is a session?
  • What happens during the first appointment?
  • Can I decide how quickly to talk about more personal matters?

Having straightforward answers can make the decision feel less daunting, and the pace of what you share remains up to you.

Agreeing on priorities

Therapy should reflect what matters to you. Talk with Christine about what you hope to understand, which changes feel hardest and how you will notice movement. If your needs shift between sessions, ask what support is available, including involving your GP where that would be useful.

A quiet first step

Some people find it easier to send a short enquiry than to pick up the phone. However you choose to contact the Lane Cove clinic, it is fine to say you are unsure whether therapy is right for you. That uncertainty is a perfectly reasonable place to start.
