Sound can give wandering attention somewhere to return. This relaxation practice is optional and can be shaped around what feels comfortable.
A widespread misunderstanding about mindfulness is that you must empty your head of thoughts. In reality, the practice is closer to noticing where your attention is and gently bringing it back. During a sound-based exercise, you might hear a tone, find yourself thinking about dinner, then return to the sound once you realise you have wandered. That simple loop is the exercise itself, not a sign of failure.
Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, offers sound-based relaxation as a wellbeing experience, and it can sit alongside other appointments or stand on its own.

You do not have to read every tingle or shift in mood as a change in energy. Some people find sound soothing; others prefer silence, slow breathing or a short walk. All of these are valid, and the sound practice should always remain your choice.
Let Christine know what you enjoy and what you would rather skip. If worry, low mood or poor sleep has been hanging around for a while, it deserves a fuller conversation, which may include your GP or a mental health professional, rather than being left to a relaxation session alone.

Comfort can be fine-tuned in many ways. The instruments can be played more quietly or moved further from you, you can sit upright instead of lying down, and you can pause at any time. You are not expected to feel anything in particular or to remain motionless. A pleasant period of rest is a perfectly good reason to take part, and it should not be mistaken for treatment of a medical problem.
If you would like to see whether sound helps you settle into a few minutes of mindful attention, ask Christine about a short introductory session at the Lane Cove clinic. Simply come with an open mind and leave any expectations at the door.
