Stone or Metal Gua Sha Tool? Why the Material Matters Less

7:59 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comentarios

A beautiful gua sha tool is only part of the story. Before starting any routine, check that the pressure, area and purpose suit your skin.

The tool is the easy part

Polished jade, rose quartz, stainless steel and horn gua sha tools are sold in pretty boxes, often with promises attached to the material. Choosing one can be enjoyable, but the material says nothing about whether the pressure, the area of the body or the purpose of the routine is right for you.

Before you begin scraping at home or book a session, Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, can talk through what suits your skin, health and plans at the Lane Cove clinic. A few minutes of discussion before you start can save your skin from unnecessary irritation.

Details to mention first

  • Active skin problems such as eczema, acne, rashes or broken areas.
  • Recent cosmetic procedures, peels or retinoid creams that may increase sensitivity.
  • A tendency to bruise easily or medicines that affect bruising.
  • Where on the body you were planning to use the tool.

Gentle handling over premium materials

Clear instructions and light, controlled strokes matter far more than whether a tool cost a lot. A higher price or a rare stone does not automatically produce a better clinical result, and no single material suits everyone. Christine can show how much pressure is reasonable and which areas to leave alone.

Watching how the skin recovers

Before any further session, mention lingering tenderness, irritation or unusual bruising. Technique and tool should be matched to you, not to a photograph of the skin colour someone else achieved. Christine may suggest carrying on, adjusting the method or trying a different option.

Bring the tool along

If you have already bought a gua sha tool, take it with you to your Lane Cove appointment. Christine can look at its edges and shape, explain whether it suits the area you had in mind and help you settle on a routine that feels comfortable and sensible. You may find that a simple, inexpensive tool used gently is all you need.
