Moxa Sticks, Cones and More: Forms of Moxibustion

7:32 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comentarios

Moxibustion is not one single technique. Different forms of moxa and ways of applying heat suit different people and situations.

Not just the stick in the photo

Pictures of moxibustion often show a glowing cigar-shaped stick held above the skin. That is only one option. Moxa, prepared from mugwort, can also be shaped into small cones, attached to the handle of an acupuncture needle, placed in a box over the skin or made into lower-smoke charcoal rolls. Each delivers heat in a different way, so a single photograph tells you little about how your session would run.

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, chooses the form according to the person, the area and any sensitivities.

Questions to ask before a session

Ask Christine which form she is considering for you and why. Useful follow-up questions include how close the heat will be, how long it will last and how you can signal if it becomes too warm.

Let her know if smoke or warmth has ever bothered you outside a treatment room, perhaps around a campfire or incense. Asthma, allergies, sensitive skin and reduced feeling in an area are also important to share.

Suitability over tradition

The key question is whether a particular method suits you, not which product looks most authentic or smells strongest. A less traditional-looking option may be the more comfortable choice.

Comfort throughout

Before heat is applied, agree on a way to let Christine know if anything feels wrong, and ask what aftercare to follow afterwards. Your skin, heat sensitivity and breathing all count. Any instructions you receive are specific to you; a routine from a website or a friend's experience is no guide to what your body will tolerate.

If you are pregnant, let Christine know before any moxibustion is discussed, and keep your maternity team informed.

Learning more in Lane Cove

Curious to see the various forms first? Christine keeps examples at the Lane Cove clinic and will happily describe how each is used and which, if any, might suit your situation.
