Moxibustion covers several distinct techniques, each with its own precautions. Here is how to find out exactly which one is planned for you.
Moxibustion is a broad term. It can refer to a glowing stick held above the skin, small cones placed on a protective layer, or moxa burned on top of a needle or other material. These are separate applications with their own precautions, not a menu for experimenting with at home after watching a video.
Before any heat is used, Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, will explain at the Lane Cove clinic which technique she has in mind and why.
Knowing the word moxibustion is not the same as understanding what will happen in your session. Heat, smoke, contact with the skin and your own health circumstances all deserve a specific conversation.
Reduced feeling in the skin, a tendency to blister, breathing sensitivity or pregnancy can all influence which method is suitable, or whether moxibustion is appropriate at all. Mention these early so Christine can plan accordingly.
Work out a hand signal for when the warmth becomes too much, and ask what aftercare to follow once you are home. Keep any instructions specific to you; another person's routine or an online demonstration is not a guide to your own needs.
Moxa sticks are easy to buy online, and it can be tempting to try them on your own. If you are considering home use, talk it over at the Lane Cove clinic before lighting anything. Christine can explain whether it suits you and, if so, exactly how to do it safely, including fire safety and how to put the stick out properly.
