The resting time during acupuncture is a natural moment for slow breathing and visualisation. Learn a simple guided practice you can use on the table and at home.
Once the needles are in place, most acupuncture appointments include a period of rest. For some people that time flies; for others, a busy mind keeps ticking. A simple breathing and visualisation routine can give that quiet time a gentle focus. At our Lane Cove rooms on Longueville Road, we often suggest the following practice, which you can also use at home.
In traditional Chinese medicine theory, the breath and the mind are closely linked to the movement of qi, and a settled mind is seen as part of a good session. From a modern point of view, many people find slow breathing helps them feel more relaxed. Research on meditation and breathing practices is ongoing, so we offer this as a comfort and wellbeing practice, alongside any medical care you receive. If you are seeing a GP or specialist, including for fertility-related care, keep them informed about acupuncture and other complementary practices.
On the treatment table, let the support beneath you take your weight. At home, sit or lie with your back straight. Switch your phone to airplane mode, and use headphones if you are following a recording.
Breathe in through the nose for a gentle count of four, then out for a count of six. Let your belly rise and fall naturally.
Picture yourself beside a clear waterfall. With each out-breath, imagine the water carrying away tension or heaviness.
Visualise a soft green glow in the centre of your chest. Yogic tradition associates green with the heart chakra, and many people find it a peaceful colour to hold in mind.
Let go of trying. If thoughts come, let them pass like leaves on the water and return to the breath.
A few drops of frankincense or patchouli oil can create a calming atmosphere. Use them sparingly, and avoid them if you are pregnant, trying to conceive and unsure about oils, have asthma or are sensitive to scent. Your practitioner is happy to talk through what suits you.
