Stiff Neck Warning Signs to Check Before Any Gua Sha

7:08 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

A stiff neck is common, but some signs need medical attention first. If gua sha is suitable, pressure and skin recovery guide the plan.

When a stiff neck needs a closer look

Waking up unable to turn your head comfortably is a familiar frustration, especially when it makes reversing the car or looking at a colleague awkward. Most of the time it is an ordinary muscular stiffness, but not always. A recent fall or knock, an unusual or severe headache, or new symptoms such as numbness, weakness or changes in vision call for prompt medical assessment before any hands-on treatment.

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, will ask about these warning signs at the start, and she may suggest seeing a GP first if anything sounds unusual.

If gua sha is suitable

Gua sha uses a smooth-edged tool stroked along the skin. Agree beforehand on a pressure you can tolerate and point out which movements bother you most, such as looking over a shoulder or tilting your head down to read.

Resist the temptation to judge the session by how red the skin turns. A more practical check is whether ordinary movements feel easier over the following days, and whether your skin has fully settled before another session is considered.

Illustrative, Lane Cove: Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, glides a jade gua sha tool over the shoulder of a patient lying on her side.

Reporting how your skin recovered

At your next appointment, mention any tenderness that lingered, itching or bruising that seemed out of proportion. The technique and tool should be chosen to suit you, not to recreate an image seen online. Based on what you report, Christine can continue, modify the approach or suggest something different.

Keeping a brief note of when the stiffness started, what eases it and what aggravates it will make the assessment quicker and more focused.

Desk work and long commutes across the lower North Shore can leave necks feeling locked up. If you would like to explore whether gua sha fits your situation, Christine can assess your neck at the Lane Cove clinic and explain each step before she begins.
