Calm parenting starts with your own stress levels

12:47 pm 9 April 2025 Jose Luis Guerrero Fernandez 0 Comments

If you keep promising yourself you will stay patient and then lose your cool anyway, the missing piece may not be discipline. It may be the amount of stress you are carrying into each day.

A common morning scene

Shoes are missing, the school bag is not packed and the clock is ticking. A small delay turns into a raised voice, and the drive to school is quiet and tense. Later you replay it and wonder why staying calm felt so out of reach. If this sounds familiar, you are far from alone.

What stress does to our reactions

When pressure stacks up, the body shifts into a more reactive state. Thoughtful, measured responses take more effort, and quick reactions take over. This is a normal human pattern, not a parenting failure. It also explains why simply telling yourself to calm down rarely works in the moment.

Restraint versus regulation

Restraint is about stopping a reaction once it has started. Regulation is about the conditions underneath: how rested you are, how much is on your plate, and whether you have had any moment for yourself. Working on those conditions can make restraint far less of a battle.

Getting to know your triggers

Try keeping a short note for a week of the moments you felt your patience slip. Many parents find patterns, such as:

  • the half-hour before school or bedtime
  • days with little sleep the night before
  • times when work messages keep arriving at home

Once a pattern is visible, you can plan around it: preparing bags the night before, building in a buffer of ten minutes, or agreeing a quiet signal with your partner when you need to step away.

Making room for self-care

Self-care is not a luxury; it is part of keeping your reserves topped up. That might be a walk, a phone call with a friend, mindfulness practice or an appointment that gives you an hour of stillness. At Lane Cove Acupuncture on Longueville Road, some parents include acupuncture in their routine because they find the sessions a calm pause in a busy week. Experiences vary, and it is best seen as a complement to medical care. If stress or anxiety is affecting your health, your GP is the right first step.

Be gentle with yourself

Feeling stretched thin is a message that you need support, not a verdict on the kind of parent you are.
