Home moxibustion involves heat, smoke and burning material. Ask whether it suits you before buying a kit or following an online guide.
Online guides and starter kits can make home moxibustion look as easy as lighting a candle. In reality, smouldering moxa produces heat, ash and smoke, which bring practical risks such as burns, irritated airways and fire hazards. A written guide cannot check how well you feel heat, whether your lungs tolerate smoke or what else is going on with your health.
Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, suggests holding off on any purchase until you have talked it through.

The first thing to ask Christine is whether home use makes sense for you at all. For some people it will not. If it is being considered, you need instructions written for you personally, plus a clear plan for when to stop and where to get help if something goes wrong, such as a blister or a burn.
A video or generic checklist is not permission to experiment with longer, hotter or more frequent sessions. More heat is not better, and improvising can cause harm.
Before heat is used, agree how you will recognise discomfort and what aftercare to follow. Your skin, sensitivity to heat and any breathing conditions all matter. Keep your plan individual: another person's routine or an online tutorial cannot tell you what your body needs.
Keep a smoke alarm working, ventilate the room and never leave burning moxa unattended, especially around children or pets.
Tell her too about any asthma, pregnancy, diabetes or numbness, since each of these affects whether home heat is sensible.
If you already own a kit or are thinking of buying one, bring it with you. Christine can look at the product at the Lane Cove clinic, explain whether home use suits you, and if it does, show you a safe way to proceed.
