Moxibustion is often offered as part of an acupuncture appointment. Learn how the two are combined, how moxa is traditionally used in women's health, and the precautions to discuss first.
The classical Chinese term for acupuncture, zhenjiu, literally joins two words: needle and moxa. For centuries the two have been used together, and at our Longueville Road rooms in Lane Cove moxibustion remains a natural part of many acupuncture appointments. If you are new to it, this article explains how the pairing works and what to think about before trying it.
Moxa is made from the dried leaves of the mugwort plant. During a session your acupuncturist may use it in one of several ways:
The aim is comfortable warmth, never burning. You can ask for the moxa to be lifted away at any moment.
In TCM theory, needles are used to guide qi, while warmth from moxa is said to add a nourishing, warming quality for people whose pattern is described as cold or depleted. Some people use moxibustion during winter, for stiff or achy areas, or for digestive comfort. Research into moxibustion is ongoing and the evidence so far is mixed, so we offer it as a traditional practice and a complement to medical care.
Many visitors to our clinic come for fertility-related and menstrual wellbeing care. Traditionally, moxibustion has been used in relation to the menstrual cycle, fertility and pregnancy. If you are under the care of a GP, fertility specialist, obstetrician or midwife, please keep them informed, and only consider moxibustion during pregnancy with their agreement. It is a supportive, relaxing practice for some people, not a substitute for medical treatment.
The traditional view is that people who feel cold easily, have sluggish digestion or carry a lot of stress may be most drawn to moxibustion. Please tell your acupuncturist about your health history first. Moxibustion is not recommended for people with diabetes or reduced skin sensation, because they may not notice if the heat becomes too strong. Sensitive skin, asthma and other respiratory conditions are also worth mentioning, as the smoke may be unsuitable.
