The Spleen and Stomach in TCM: a guide to digestion

12:30 pm 21 April 2025 Luis Guerrero 0 Comments

Traditional Chinese medicine places digestion at the heart of wellbeing. Learn how TCM theory describes the Spleen and Stomach, and how acupuncture, herbs and diet are traditionally used as a complement to medical care.

Digestion through a traditional lens

If you visit a TCM practitioner with a digestive complaint, you might be surprised by the questions. Alongside asking about bloating, reflux or bowel habits, they will want to know about your energy, your sleep, your mood and whether you prefer warm or cold drinks. This reflects a traditional view in which digestion is connected to the whole person.

The Spleen and Stomach in TCM theory

In traditional Chinese medicine, the Spleen and Stomach are not simply anatomical organs. They describe a system responsible for transforming food and drink into Qi and nourishment. Traditionally, when this system is weak or overburdened, people are said to experience tiredness after eating, a heavy feeling, loose bowels or a poor appetite. TCM also links digestive imbalance with skin concerns and mood. These are concepts from a traditional framework, not medical diagnoses.

How acupuncture is used

Points are traditionally selected on the abdomen, legs and arms to support the Spleen and Stomach system. Many people find the sessions relaxing, which matters because stress and digestion often go hand in hand. Acupuncture has been researched for nausea and IBS-type symptoms, but the findings are mixed and studies continue, so we do not promise any specific digestive change.

Food and lifestyle in the TCM tradition

  • Favour warm, cooked meals over large amounts of cold or raw food.
  • Eat at regular times and avoid very late dinners.
  • Sit down, slow down and chew well.
  • Keep stress in check with rest and gentle movement.

If you have a diagnosed condition or take medication, check with your GP or a dietitian before making big dietary changes.

Chinese herbal medicine

Herbal formulas are traditionally tailored to your pattern. Please tell your doctor about any herbs, as interactions with medicines are possible.

See your GP first
