How does traditional Chinese medicine think about endometriosis, and how might acupuncture and herbal medicine sit alongside your gynaecologist's care? A plain-language guide from our Lane Cove rooms.
Western medicine describes endometriosis as tissue similar to the uterine lining growing outside the uterus, which may lead to pelvic pain, heavy or painful periods and, in some cases, trouble conceiving. Diagnosis and medical treatment come from your GP and gynaecologist. Traditional Chinese medicine, by contrast, uses an older language of patterns and energy. Understanding both helps you make informed choices.
In TCM theory, menstrual discomfort is commonly linked with what is called Qi and Blood stagnation, sometimes alongside patterns described as cold or heat in the lower abdomen. Practitioners traditionally look at the timing and character of your symptoms, your tongue and your pulse to choose an approach. These concepts are part of a traditional system and are not medical diagnoses.
Acupuncture sessions involve fine, single-use needles placed at chosen points while you rest. Many people describe the experience as calming and value the time to relax. Researchers continue to study acupuncture for period pain, including possible effects on natural chemicals like endorphins, but findings are mixed. We therefore do not promise any change in pain or in the condition.
Traditionally, herbal formulas are tailored to the individual pattern and adjusted over time. In TCM theory they aim to support warmth and movement in the lower abdomen. Herbs can interact with medicines, including hormonal therapies, so your doctor should always know what you are taking.
Acupuncture and herbs are offered as a complement to medical care. Please keep your gynaecologist informed and see them promptly if pain changes or worsens.
Our practitioners see people with endometriosis at the Lane Cove Healing Centre on Longueville Road, in a quiet, unhurried setting.
