Thread Embedding vs Acupuncture: Two Different Procedures

7:10 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Acupoint thread embedding and standard acupuncture are often mentioned together, but they are distinct procedures with different consent and aftercare needs.

Similar names, different procedures

Search for acupuncture and weight loss online and you will probably come across acupoint thread embedding as well. The two are sometimes presented as variations of one treatment, yet they differ in an important way. With thread embedding, a small piece of absorbable material is placed in the tissues and left there to dissolve over time. With standard acupuncture, every needle is taken out before you leave the room.

Because something stays in the body, the conversation about consent, possible reactions and aftercare has to be different. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, believes each invasive procedure deserves its own explanation rather than being bundled under one familiar label.

Looking past the weight-loss pitch

Advertising for embedding often focuses on slimming. A marketing message, however, is no substitute for a frank talk about what the evidence does and does not show, what the risks are and which alternatives exist, including support from your GP or a dietitian.

If a procedure has been suggested to you anywhere, ask precisely what it involves. Confirm with Christine which technique she is actually proposing, and expect a separate suitability check for anything beyond ordinary needling.

Defining what you want help with

It can help to separate the problem from the hoped-for result. Perhaps you want less discomfort during a particular activity, or simply a clearer understanding of what is going on, or guidance on when a different kind of assessment would be wise. Ask how any acupuncture plan will be reviewed and what would cause it to change.

Write down any procedure names you have seen advertised so you can check each one during the consultation.

Asking questions in Lane Cove

Plenty of people walk into a consultation confused by the terminology they have read online, and that is completely understandable. At the Lane Cove clinic, Christine can explain the practical differences, what she does and does not offer, and how a standard acupuncture session would be planned around your own goals.
