More Cupping Is Not Always Better: Spacing Sessions Safely

7:58 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Extra sessions do not mean faster progress, and damaged skin needs time. Here is how to talk about frequency and recovery before booking more cupping.

Frequency is a care decision

It is tempting to think that if one cupping session felt good, three in a week would be better still. In practice, excessive cupping can injure the skin, and repeating it over an area that has not recovered can make healing slower and more uncomfortable. How strong and how often are practical questions, not a test of how committed you are.

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, offers cupping at the Lane Cove clinic and plans the gap between sessions around how your skin and body have responded.

What to discuss before rebooking

  • How the skin looked and felt in the days after the last session.
  • Any change in the discomfort or activity you came in about.
  • Your schedule, so the next visit allows enough recovery time.

Signs that call for advice instead

New blisters, broken skin, pain that is significant or growing, or feeling generally unwell after a session are reasons to contact Christine rather than book another round. If symptoms are severe, see your GP. These signs are information about how your body has responded, and they deserve attention before anything is repeated.

Assessment leads the plan

A good plan is shaped by what is observed at each visit. Repeating a procedure more often does not force quicker progress, and Christine may suggest a longer break, a gentler approach or a different option.

Reviewing what you actually care about

Pick one everyday task, such as carrying shopping or turning your head while driving, and use it as your reference point. Combine that with how comfortable the sessions have been and how well the skin has recovered. Marks on the skin are only one small piece of the picture.

Planning your next visit

At your next appointment in Lane Cove, bring a quick note of how each day felt after cupping. That simple record gives you and Christine a sound basis for deciding when, or whether, to continue.
