Moxibustion Plus Cupping? Why Each Technique Needs a Reason

8:29 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

A longer list of techniques does not make a session better. Here is how to make sure every part of a combined plan has a clear purpose.

More is not automatically more complete

Articles describing moxibustion, cupping, gua sha and other external techniques side by side can make a combined session sound like the most thorough option. A list of available methods, however, does not mean that any one person needs several of them at once.

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, uses several traditional techniques in Lane Cove and can explain why each one would or would not belong in your plan.

Questions for a combined plan

  • What does each proposed technique add, and why?
  • Could a simpler plan with fewer components work for me?
  • How will we tell which part is making a difference?
  • How will the overall plan be reviewed?

Your preferences matter too

Along with your symptoms, mention how much time you have for appointments, how you tolerate heat and pressure and how long your skin usually takes to settle. Someone with a busy schedule or sensitive skin may prefer a focused session rather than a long one involving several techniques.

A coherent plan makes the purpose of every component easy to understand. Extra procedures should not be added simply because they are on offer.

Comfort with heat

If moxibustion is part of the plan, agree on how you will signal discomfort, and ask about aftercare before you leave. Skin condition, sensation and any sensitivity to smoke all matter. Home instructions ought to reflect your body and circumstances, not a stranger's video.

Keeping it simple when it suits

There is nothing wrong with starting with one technique and adding another later if there is a clear reason. If you have questions about a combined approach you have read about or been offered elsewhere, bring them to your Lane Cove appointment. Christine can explain the reasoning so you can make a confident choice about what feels right for you. A shorter, clearer session is often easier to fit into a working week.
