Bowen Therapy — Gentle, Powerful Fascial Healing

Experience the profound relaxation and pain relief of Bowen Therapy at our Lane Cove clinic. An exceptionally gentle technique that works through the body's fascia and nervous system — ideal for patients of any age or sensitivity level.

North Shore Sydney Complements Acupuncture Mon–Sun 9am–9pm

A Gentle Revolution in Soft Tissue Therapy

Developed by Australian osteopath Tom Bowen in the 1950s and '60s, Bowen Therapy (also known as Bowtech or the Bowen Technique) is a distinctive hands-on therapy that uses very gentle, precise rolling movements across muscle fibres, tendons and fascia.

Unlike deep tissue massage or chiropractic adjustment, Bowen moves are extremely light — many patients are surprised by how little physical pressure is involved. Yet the therapeutic effect can be profound. The technique works by sending specific neurological signals through the body's connective tissue network, prompting the nervous system to reset muscle tension, improve circulation and stimulate the body's own healing processes.

A distinctive feature of Bowen Therapy is the use of deliberate pauses of two to five minutes between sets of moves. These pauses are not rest breaks — they are an integral part of the technique, allowing the nervous system to process the input before further moves are applied. Many patients fall into a deeply relaxed, almost meditative state during these pauses.

Bowen Therapy is available to patients of all ages — from newborns to the elderly — and can be safely applied to people who are pregnant, in significant pain, or who have conditions that make stronger physical therapies unsuitable.

Conditions Commonly Treated

  • Acute and chronic back pain
  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Knee and ankle injuries
  • Postural imbalances and scoliosis
  • TMJ (jaw) dysfunction
  • Respiratory conditions (asthma, hay fever)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Stress and tension-related conditions
  • Digestive complaints

What to Wear

Bowen Therapy can be performed through light clothing, which many patients prefer. You may be asked to undress to your underwear if direct skin contact is clinically indicated. Loose, comfortable clothing is recommended. Bring or wear active wear if possible.

What to Expect During a Bowen Therapy Session

  • Intake and Assessment

Your first session begins with a thorough assessment of your presenting complaint, medical history, posture and movement patterns. This helps us identify which Bowen procedures are most appropriate and design your session.

  • Gentle Moves with Pauses

You will lie comfortably on a treatment table (or sit if needed). Your practitioner applies a series of gentle rolling moves across specific muscle groups and fascial lines. Between each set of moves, you rest quietly for two to five minutes as the nervous system integrates the input.

  • Whole-Body Response

Bowen often produces a full-body relaxation response. Patients frequently report warmth, a sense of deep release, tingling, or spontaneous emotional release. This is entirely normal and indicates the nervous system is responding.

  • Post-Treatment Integration

After your session, you are advised to walk gently for at least 20 minutes to support integration, avoid sitting for prolonged periods, drink extra water, and avoid other bodywork for five to seven days to allow the Bowen input to continue working.

  • Typical Course of Treatment

Acute conditions often respond within two to three sessions. Chronic or complex issues may require a longer course. Sessions are typically spaced five to seven days apart to allow full integration between treatments.

Bowen + Acupuncture: A Powerful Combination

Many of our North Shore patients receive both Bowen Therapy and acupuncture as part of an integrated treatment plan. Acupuncture addresses underlying TCM patterns while Bowen works on the fascial and musculoskeletal layers. Your practitioner will advise whether a combined approach is appropriate for your condition and how to sequence treatments for maximum benefit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy is fundamentally different from massage in both technique and intention. Massage applies sustained pressure and gliding strokes to relax muscles and improve circulation. Bowen uses brief, light, cross-fibre rolling moves followed by deliberate pauses — the practitioner's hands are off the body for much of the session. Bowen works primarily through neurological signalling rather than mechanical pressure. Many patients who cannot tolerate deep pressure find Bowen Therapy far more comfortable and equally (or more) effective.
Some private health funds in Australia include Bowen Therapy under extras cover, while others do not. Coverage depends on your specific fund and policy level. We recommend contacting your fund directly to ask whether Bowen Therapy is included. We offer HICAPS on-the-spot claiming for all covered treatments at our Lane Cove clinic.
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) typically responds well to Bowen Therapy, though it is a condition that takes time. Many patients notice meaningful improvement in range of motion and pain reduction within three to five sessions. A full course for frozen shoulder is usually six to twelve sessions depending on the stage of the condition. The more established the frozen shoulder, the longer the course required. Bowen works particularly well in the earlier (inflammatory) stages and during the thawing phase.
Yes — Bowen Therapy is one of the safest forms of physical therapy during pregnancy because of its gentle, non-forceful nature. Specific adaptations are made to positioning and the choice of moves during pregnancy. It is particularly helpful for pelvic girdle pain, lower back pain and general discomfort in the second and third trimesters. Our Lane Cove practitioners have experience working with pregnant patients at all stages.
