Vaccaria and gold ear seeds on auricular acupuncture points at our Lane Cove clinic — extending your treatment between sessions for anxiety, insomnia, smoking cessation and more.
Book a Session Anxiety & DepressionAuriculotherapy (also known as auricular acupuncture or ear acupuncture) is a therapeutic system based on the principle that the external ear contains a complete microsystem of the body — a map of reflex points corresponding to every organ, body part and physiological function. By stimulating specific points on the ear with needles, electrical stimulation, or small seeds or pellets, practitioners can produce therapeutic effects throughout the body via the nervous system and meridian pathways.
The modern auricular map was systematised by French neurologist Dr Paul Nogier in the 1950s, who observed that a pattern of points on the ear corresponded to an inverted foetus — with the earlobe representing the head and face, the antihelix representing the spine, and the inner bowl of the ear (concha) representing the thoracic and abdominal organs. Nogier's map was subsequently adopted and extensively expanded by Chinese acupuncturists, who integrated it with TCM meridian theory and developed it into one of the most clinically versatile systems within Chinese medicine.
At Lane Cove Acupuncture, auriculotherapy is most commonly delivered through ear seeds — small seeds from the Vaccaria plant or tiny gold or silver metal pellets — adhered to specific auricular points with a small piece of adhesive tape. This allows the patient to continue stimulating the points between clinic visits, dramatically extending the therapeutic benefit of each session.
Ear seeds sit on the surface of the skin at specific auricular points and apply gentle, continuous pressure. The patient is instructed to press and massage each seed firmly for 20–30 seconds, three to five times daily, particularly when experiencing the symptoms being treated — a craving, an anxious thought, a pain sensation or the urge to sleep.
This self-stimulation activates the auricular point, sending afferent nerve signals to the brainstem and hypothalamus, which in turn modulate the organ systems and nervous system pathways associated with that point. From a TCM perspective, this stimulates the flow of Qi through the relevant meridian and organ system, maintaining the energetic shift initiated during the clinic treatment.
Traditional ear seeds come from the Vaccaria hispanica plant, a small rounded seed with a smooth surface ideal for applying gentle, consistent pressure. They are held in place by a small beige adhesive square and are hypoallergenic for most patients. Vaccaria seeds are the most commonly used option and produce excellent results for the majority of presentations.
Small gold or silver metal pellets provide a slightly firmer pressure than Vaccaria seeds and have additional properties in TCM. Gold is considered tonifying and warming; silver is considered cooling and dispersing. The choice of metal is made based on the patient's TCM pattern — for example, gold might be chosen for a deficiency pattern, silver for an excess or heat pattern.
Auricular points corresponding to the Shen Men (Spirit Gate), sympathetic nervous system, Heart and Kidney points are the primary combination for anxiety management. Shen Men in particular is a powerful point for inducing calm — many patients report an immediate sense of relaxation when it is stimulated. For patients in Lane Cove, St Leonards and North Sydney who experience work-related anxiety and stress, ear seeds provide a discreet, on-demand calming tool accessible at any moment. See our anxiety and depression page for comprehensive treatment information.
Auricular points for insomnia include Shen Men, Heart, Kidney, Subcortex and the insomnia-specific point (Shimian). Patients stimulate these seeds for 30 seconds before bed and if they wake during the night. For the early-waking pattern of insomnia (common in Liver or Kidney disharmony), ear seeds provide a gentle non-pharmaceutical support that many patients find highly effective. See our insomnia page for full details.
The NADA (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association) protocol, using five specific ear points (Sympathetic, Shen Men, Lung, Liver, Kidney), has been extensively used in addiction and smoking cessation programmes globally. Ear seeds on these points are used between formal acupuncture sessions to reduce cravings, manage withdrawal anxiety and support the transition away from smoking. Research supports this protocol's effectiveness in reducing craving intensity and improving quit rates when combined with appropriate counselling support.
Auricular acupuncture and ear seeds at points including Hunger, Mouth, Endocrine, Stomach and Shen Men are used as part of a comprehensive weight management programme incorporating dietary guidance and lifestyle modification. Ear seeds help manage between-meal cravings and address the emotional eating patterns that often underlie weight challenges.
Auricular points corresponding to the affected body areas (e.g., lumbar spine, cervical spine, shoulder, knee) combined with analgesic points such as Shen Men, Thalamus and Endocrine provide on-demand pain relief between clinic sessions. Many patients with chronic pain find that ear seeds substantially reduce their reliance on analgesic medications.
Auricular points including Uterus, Ovary, Endocrine, Kidney and Shen Men are used alongside body acupuncture in our fertility support programme. Seeds at these points between sessions support hormonal regulation and reduce stress — a significant contributor to reproductive challenges.
The NADA Protocol: The five-point NADA auricular protocol (Sympathetic, Shen Men, Lung, Liver, Kidney) was developed in the 1970s by Dr Michael Smith at Lincoln Hospital, New York, for substance detoxification. It has since been adopted in hundreds of addiction treatment programmes and disaster relief settings worldwide — including by the Red Cross and in post-disaster mental health response — and is now used for anxiety, PTSD and stress management more broadly.
Auriculotherapy has a substantial and growing evidence base. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses support its efficacy for perioperative anxiety reduction, postoperative pain management, insomnia, smoking cessation and chemotherapy-induced nausea. The auricular branch of the vagus nerve (ABVN) is increasingly recognised as a key neuroanatomical pathway mediating auriculotherapy's effects — particularly for anxiety, mood and inflammatory conditions — and is now the subject of dedicated research programmes at major universities.
While the evidence base for some specific applications remains preliminary, auriculotherapy compares very favourably with many conventional interventions in terms of safety profile, cost-effectiveness and patient acceptability. Our practitioners at Lane Cove Acupuncture integrate auriculotherapy as part of evidence-informed TCM practice, always within the clinical and ethical framework of AHPRA registration.
Pricing: Ear seeds are typically applied within and included in your acupuncture consultation. Initial consultation 90 min — $200. Follow-up 60 min — $175. HICAPS private health rebates available (Medibank, BUPA, HCF, NIB, HBF, AHM).
Ear seeds are generally left in for three to five days before being removed. After this time the adhesive loses its grip and the seeds should be taken off. Your ear needs a rest period of at least a day before a fresh set can be applied. Some practitioners use a two-days-on, one-day-off protocol. Your practitioner will advise the appropriate schedule for your condition.
Yes — ear seeds are very suitable for children and are often preferred to needles for paediatric conditions. They are non-invasive and can be self-managed between visits. Common paediatric applications include anxiety, insomnia, bedwetting and ADHD support. Parental or guardian consent is required for patients under 18.
Yes, sometimes — particularly with frequent showering, swimming or heavy sweating. If a seed falls off, simply remove the adhesive tape. Contact us for a replacement or a new set of seeds if you lose several before the treatment period is complete.
Vaccaria seeds on their tan adhesive backing are quite discreet and most people do not notice them unless looking closely. Gold pellets are slightly more visible but still unobtrusive. If you have an important event or presentation, you can remove the seeds beforehand and replace them afterwards.
Ear seeds can be applied as a standalone treatment without body acupuncture needles. However, the combination of body acupuncture with auriculotherapy ear seeds is typically more powerful for most conditions. Your practitioner will advise the most effective approach for your specific presentation.
