At Lane Cove Acupuncture, we provide a compassionate, unhurried space alongside evidence-informed treatment. We treat the whole person, not just the reproductive system.
Fertility acupuncture is one of our most important areas of practice at Lane Cove Acupuncture. We have supported many couples from Artarmon, Chatswood, Willoughby, Lane Cove, and across the North Shore on their journey to parenthood — whether they are trying to conceive naturally, preparing for IVF or other assisted reproductive technology, or navigating the heartache of recurrent miscarriage.
Chinese medicine has a sophisticated theoretical framework for reproductive health that developed over two thousand years of clinical observation. When integrated with modern reproductive medicine, it offers meaningful additional support for many couples. We work alongside your fertility specialist, OB/GYN, and GP — not in opposition to them.
Acupuncture influences the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis — the cascade of hormonal signalling that governs the menstrual cycle, ovulation, and early pregnancy. Research has demonstrated that acupuncture can:
A well-nourished, well-perfused endometrium is essential for implantation. Acupuncture at specific points — particularly SP-4, SP-6, ST-36, and KD-3 — has been shown in Doppler ultrasound studies to increase uterine artery blood flow and endometrial thickness, both of which are important for successful implantation. This is particularly relevant for women who have had failed IVF cycles attributed to thin endometrium or poor endometrial receptivity.
Male factor infertility accounts for approximately 40–50% of fertility challenges, yet is often under-treated. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have demonstrated the ability to improve sperm parameters — count, motility, and morphology — in multiple clinical studies. For couples from Chatswood, Artarmon, and across the North Shore, we strongly encourage male partners to attend for assessment and treatment alongside their partner, particularly when sperm analysis has identified abnormalities.
The psychological burden of fertility challenges is immense and can itself suppress reproductive function through HPA axis dysregulation. Acupuncture's well-documented stress-reducing effects — reducing cortisol, calming the autonomic nervous system, improving sleep — provide meaningful support for the emotional as well as physiological aspects of the fertility journey.
Cycle regulation, ovulation support, luteal phase strengthening, and optimising reproductive health for natural conception.
Regulating ovulation, addressing insulin resistance, and improving cycle predictability for women with PCOS and irregular menstruation.
Pre-stimulation protocol optimisation, supporting stimulation cycles, and pre/post-transfer treatment to support implantation.
Addressing the TCM patterns — often Blood stagnation or Kidney deficiency — that underlie recurrent pregnancy loss.
Reducing pain, improving pelvic circulation, and supporting fertility for women with endometriosis in conjunction with specialist care.
Improving sperm count, motility, and morphology with acupuncture and targeted herbal medicine for male partners.
Many fertility specialists now welcome acupuncture as a complementary support during IVF cycles. Here is how we typically integrate with your IVF protocol:
The optimal window for preparatory treatment. We work to improve egg quality (which matures over approximately 90 days), regulate the cycle, address any underlying patterns, and support overall reproductive health. Weekly sessions during this phase.
Acupuncture during the stimulation phase to support follicular development, manage side effects of medication (bloating, mood changes, headaches), and maintain uterine blood flow. Typically 1–2 sessions per week.
A session 24–48 hours before embryo transfer to optimise endometrial receptivity and blood flow. A post-transfer session within 24 hours to support early implantation and reduce uterine contractility.
Gentle support during the two-week wait to manage anxiety and maintain progesterone support. If pregnancy is confirmed, we continue weekly sessions through the first trimester to support implantation and manage early pregnancy symptoms.
The evidence for acupuncture in IVF is mixed and evolving. Some meta-analyses show significant benefit for clinical pregnancy rates; others show more modest effects. What is consistent is that acupuncture appears to be beneficial for stress reduction, cycle regulation, and uterine blood flow — all of which support fertility. We will discuss the evidence honestly at your consultation and help you make an informed decision about whether and how to integrate acupuncture into your treatment plan.
