Endometriosis & Pelvic Pain

Traditional Chinese Medicine offers a whole-body approach to managing endometriosis — reducing pelvic pain, regulating the menstrual cycle, and supporting your fertility journey on the North Shore.

AHPRA Registered Lane Cove & North Shore Mon–Sun 9am–9pm

When Your Body Carries More Than Pain

Endometriosis affects roughly one in seven Australian women of reproductive age, yet it takes an average of seven to ten years to receive a diagnosis. For women across Lane Cove, Artarmon and the wider North Shore, the condition brings not just physical suffering but emotional exhaustion from years of being dismissed or misunderstood.

Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus — on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, or pelvic walls. Each month, this tissue responds to hormonal fluctuations, causing inflammation, scarring, and often severe pain. The consequences extend beyond menstruation into fertility, sexual health, mood, and quality of life.

At Lane Cove Acupuncture, our practitioners work alongside your gynaecologist or GP to provide complementary care that addresses both the root pattern and the day-to-day symptoms. We don't ask you to choose between conventional medicine and TCM — we integrate both.

Common Symptoms We See

  • Severe cramping before or during menstruation
  • Pelvic pain throughout the cycle
  • Painful intercourse (dyspareunia)
  • Heavy or irregular periods
  • Bowel or bladder discomfort during your period
  • Difficulty conceiving
  • Fatigue, mood changes and brain fog
  • Lower back and hip pain

Note: TCM does not diagnose or treat endometriosis as a standalone medical condition. We work to address the underlying imbalances that correlate with your symptoms, in full cooperation with your medical team.

How Chinese Medicine Views Endometriosis

Traditional Chinese Medicine does not identify endometriosis by its biomedical label. Instead, practitioners assess the overall pattern of disharmony — looking at your menstrual history, pain character, tongue appearance, pulse quality, digestion, sleep and emotional wellbeing.

?

Blood Stasis

The most common TCM pattern in endometriosis. Blood that does not move freely through the uterus and pelvis becomes stagnant, causing fixed, stabbing pain that worsens with pressure. Dark clots in the menstrual flow are characteristic. Acupuncture and herbal formulas work to invigorate Blood circulation and clear stagnation from the pelvic cavity.

❄

Cold in the Uterus

Cold obstructs the free flow of Qi and Blood, causing cramping pain that improves with heat, cold hands and feet, and a pale or dusky complexion. Women with this pattern often feel worse in winter or when exposed to cold. Warming acupuncture points and specific herbal formulas help dispel cold and restore circulation to the reproductive organs.

?

Liver Qi Stagnation

Stress, emotional suppression and irregular routines contribute to Liver Qi Stagnation — a pattern characterised by pre-menstrual mood changes, breast tenderness, irritability, sighing and a sensation of distension in the lower abdomen. When Liver Qi cannot flow freely, Blood circulation suffers. Acupuncture that supports Liver function often provides significant relief.

Many women present with a combination of these patterns — Blood Stasis complicated by Cold, or Liver Qi Stagnation leading to Blood Stasis over time. Your practitioner will identify your dominant pattern and refine the diagnosis across several consultations as your body responds to treatment.

Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine for Endometriosis

Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncture needles placed at specific points on the body influence the nervous system, reduce inflammatory mediators and promote circulation to the pelvic organs. Research published in peer-reviewed journals suggests acupuncture can reduce the severity of dysmenorrhoea and improve quality of life for women with endometriosis-related pain.

Our Lane Cove clinic uses a protocol tailored to each phase of your menstrual cycle — a different emphasis of points during menstruation, the follicular phase, ovulation and the luteal phase — to progressively rebalance the pattern driving your symptoms.

We also offer moxibustion (warming moxa herb over acupuncture points) for patterns involving Cold, and auricular (ear) acupuncture for pain and stress management.

Herbal Medicine

Classical Chinese herbal formulas for Blood Stasis such as Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan have been used for centuries and continue to be studied for their effects on pelvic pain and uterine health. Your practitioner will prescribe a formula appropriate to your pattern, reviewed regularly as your condition evolves. All herbs prescribed at our clinic are from TGA-registered suppliers.

Fertility Considerations

Endometriosis is one of the leading causes of female infertility, affecting egg quality, implantation and the uterine environment. Women across Chatswood and Artarmon who are pursuing IVF or natural conception often come to us for TCM support alongside their fertility specialist's care.

We work to:

  • Improve blood flow to the ovaries and uterus
  • Support endometrial receptivity
  • Reduce pelvic inflammation that can impair embryo development
  • Address the stress and anxiety that accompany fertility treatments
  • Support post-surgical recovery (after laparoscopy)

See our Fertility Acupuncture page for more on how we support conception journeys.

What a Typical Course Looks Like

Most women with endometriosis see meaningful improvement over 3–6 months of regular treatment. Initial consultations (90 min, $150) allow thorough assessment. Follow-ups (60 min, $110) are typically weekly at first, then fortnightly as symptoms improve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Acupuncture does not remove endometrial lesions and should not be presented as a cure. What TCM can offer is meaningful reduction in pain severity, improved menstrual regularity, hormonal balance support, and better quality of life. Many women find they rely less on pain medication and feel more in control of their cycle. We always encourage you to maintain your relationship with your gynaecologist.
This varies considerably between individuals. Some women notice improved pain in their very next menstrual cycle; for others it takes two to three cycles to see clear change. The severity and duration of your condition, your overall health and how consistently you attend treatment all influence outcomes. We typically recommend a minimum commitment of three months before evaluating results.
Yes. Acupuncture is generally safe alongside hormonal treatments such as the contraceptive pill, Visanne (dienogest) or GnRH analogues used to manage endometriosis. It is also used safely in the pre- and post-operative periods around laparoscopy. Always inform both your surgeon and our practitioners of all medications and upcoming procedures so we can coordinate your care appropriately.
Yes, if your policy includes extras cover for acupuncture. We offer HICAPS on-the-spot claiming for all major funds including Medibank, BUPA, HCF, NIB, HBF and AHM. Check with your fund whether herbal medicine consultations are also covered under your policy. Our reception team is happy to help you check your entitlements before your appointment.
Our clinic is located near Lane Cove Village, making us very accessible for women from Artarmon, Chatswood, Willoughby, St Leonards and surrounding North Shore suburbs. By car it is typically 5–10 minutes from Artarmon, and there are bus connections from Chatswood and Artarmon that stop close to Lane Cove Village. See our clinic location page for detailed directions and parking information.
