Common Sports Injuries We Treat

Ankle Sprains

Lateral ligament sprains are the most common sports injury. Acupuncture reduces swelling, restores proprioception, and accelerates return to training.

Hamstring Tears

Grade I–II hamstring tears respond well to acupuncture combined with electro-stimulation, promoting muscle fibre repair and reducing scar tissue formation.

Plantar Fasciitis

Stubborn heel pain that resists stretching and orthotics. Acupuncture addresses the fascial tension and local inflammation at the calcaneal insertion.

Rotator Cuff Issues

Shoulder impingement, rotator cuff tendinopathy, and partial tears in swimmers and throwing athletes. Electro-acupuncture promotes tendon healing.

Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylalgia)

Chronic forearm extensor tendinopathy in tennis players, gym athletes, and office workers. Acupuncture with dry needling is highly effective.

ITB Syndrome

Lateral knee pain in runners and cyclists. Needling the iliotibial band and addressing the hip abductor chain resolves most cases within four to six sessions.

Shin Splints (MTSS)

Medial tibial stress syndrome in runners. Periosteal dry needling and acupuncture reduce bone stress response and restore training capacity.

Lower Back Pain in Athletes

Sport-related lumbar strain, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, and disc irritation. We address both the local injury and the muscular imbalances driving it.

Our Techniques: Acupuncture, Electro-Acupuncture & Dry Needling

Traditional Acupuncture

Fine sterile needles are inserted at specific points to promote Qi and Blood circulation, reduce pain, and stimulate the body's healing response. In sports injury, we combine local needling (at and around the injured tissue) with distal points along the relevant meridians to produce both immediate pain relief and systemic healing effects.

Electro-Acupuncture

A small electrical current is passed between pairs of needles, producing a gentle pulsing sensation. Electro-acupuncture is particularly valuable for:

  • Muscle tears and deep tissue injuries (stimulates satellite cells and protein synthesis)
  • Tendinopathy (promotes collagen synthesis in the tendon)
  • Nerve injuries and neuropathic pain components
  • Chronic, well-established pain patterns that have been resistant to other treatments

The frequency settings (Hz) used in electro-acupuncture influence which neurotransmitters and growth factors are released — low frequency (2 Hz) promotes enkephalin and serotonin release, while high frequency (100 Hz) stimulates dynorphin release. We adjust frequency to match your injury type and phase of healing.

Dry Needling

Dry needling targets myofascial trigger points — hyperirritable spots within muscle tissue that generate referred pain and inhibit normal muscle function. Needling trigger points produces a localised twitch response that releases the contracted muscle fibres and restores normal muscle recruitment patterns. This is particularly effective for:

  • Post-injury muscle guarding and splinting
  • Chronic overuse patterns in repetitive sport (swimming shoulder, runner's knee)
  • Muscle activation deficits in the kinetic chain

Recovery Protocol for North Shore Athletes

We work with athletes at every stage of recovery — from acute injury in the first 48–72 hours through to return-to-sport readiness and long-term injury prevention.

Acute Phase (Days 1–5)

Initial assessment and treatment within 48–72 hours where possible. Acupuncture reduces acute inflammatory pain, promotes lymphatic drainage to reduce swelling, and begins the healing cascade. We coordinate with your GP or specialist if imaging or further assessment is needed.

Subacute Phase (Weeks 1–3)

Twice-weekly sessions during this phase for significant injuries. We progress from anti-inflammatory treatment to promoting tissue regeneration, restoring range of motion, and beginning to address the compensatory patterns that developed around the injury. Electro-acupuncture is incorporated.

Rehabilitation Phase (Weeks 3–8)

Weekly sessions coordinated with your exercise rehabilitation program. We work alongside physiotherapists, strength coaches, and sports medicine physicians. Our focus shifts to optimising tissue quality, restoring full strength and proprioception, and managing the return-to-sport load.

Return to Sport & Maintenance

Fortnightly or monthly sessions during the return-to-competition phase. Acupuncture at this stage serves a recovery and performance optimisation function — reducing accumulated tissue stress, improving recovery speed, and preventing reinjury. Many North Shore athletes continue monthly maintenance sessions throughout their season.
