Safe, evidence-informed acupuncture for Lane Cove and North Shore mums-to-be — from early pregnancy through to birth preparation and post-natal recovery.
Pregnancy is a time of profound change — physically, emotionally and energetically. Traditional Chinese Medicine has supported women through pregnancy for thousands of years, and contemporary research continues to validate its role in addressing the common discomforts and complications that arise during this extraordinary time.
At Lane Cove Acupuncture, we see pregnant women from across the North Shore — Lane Cove, Willoughby, St Leonards, Crows Nest and beyond — at all stages of pregnancy. Our practitioners use modified positions, pillows and specially selected points appropriate to each trimester to ensure treatment is comfortable and appropriate throughout your pregnancy.
Many of our pregnant patients are also existing patients who conceived with our fertility support. Others are referred by their midwives or obstetricians at Royal North Shore Hospital or the Mater Hospital. All are welcome.
Acupuncture is generally considered safe during pregnancy when performed by qualified, AHPRA-registered practitioners. Certain acupuncture points are contraindicated in pregnancy and are avoided entirely in our protocols. Always inform our clinic that you are pregnant when booking. We recommend you also advise your midwife or obstetrician that you are receiving acupuncture.
The first trimester is a delicate time of rapid development. TCM focuses on nourishing Qi and Blood to support the developing embryo and reducing Stomach Qi rebelliousness — the TCM mechanism underlying morning sickness. Acupuncture and wrist-band stimulation of the Pericardium 6 point have the strongest evidence base for pregnancy-related nausea of any complementary approach. Treatment is gentle and appropriately conservative in the first trimester.
Most women feel more energised in the second trimester, but back pain, pelvic girdle pain (symphysis pubis dysfunction), round ligament discomfort, heartburn and gestational fatigue are common presentations. Acupuncture addresses musculoskeletal issues effectively and safely, without the medication restrictions that apply during pregnancy. Many Lane Cove and Willoughby mums find this their preferred time to establish a regular treatment rhythm.
From around 33–35 weeks, if your baby is in a breech position, a TCM technique using moxibustion (burning moxa herb near the acupuncture point BL67 on the little toe) can encourage the baby to turn to the optimal cephalic (head-down) position. Multiple clinical trials support this technique. We teach you how to apply moxa at home between sessions to maximise frequency of treatment. Always confirm breech status with your midwife or obstetrician first.
Pre-birth acupuncture from 36 weeks is a well-established protocol designed to ripen and soften the cervix, encourage optimal fetal positioning and prepare the body for an efficient labour. A New Zealand study by Debra Betts and Sue Lennox found that women who received pre-birth acupuncture had lower rates of medical induction and caesarean section. We offer weekly pre-birth sessions from 36 weeks and encourage you to tell your midwife you are doing this.
The period after birth — known in TCM as the "fourth trimester" — is a time of significant depletion. Blood loss in labour, the demands of breastfeeding and the intense physical and emotional transition to motherhood draw heavily on a woman's Qi and Blood reserves. TCM post-natal treatment focuses on nourishing Blood, tonifying Qi, supporting lactation, addressing post-natal anxiety or low mood, and rebuilding physical resilience. We welcome new mums from Lane Cove, Crows Nest and St Leonards as soon as they feel ready to travel.
Acupuncture at the Pericardium 6 (Neiguan) point has the strongest evidence base for pregnancy nausea and vomiting of any non-pharmacological intervention. Multiple systematic reviews support its effectiveness. For women with hyperemesis gravidarum (severe nausea), acupuncture is used as an adjunct to medical care.
A Norwegian RCT found acupuncture significantly reduced pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy compared to exercise and usual care. Many North Shore mums who work desk jobs in St Leonards or Crows Nest find acupuncture and targeted advice on posture and movement essential for maintaining comfort and mobility through the second and third trimesters.
Moxibustion at BL67 is one of the most commonly studied TCM techniques in obstetrics. While evidence is mixed, some studies show success rates of 65–75% for encouraging spontaneous version to head-down position when used from 33–35 weeks. It is low-risk, non-invasive and worth attempting before considering external cephalic version (ECV).
