Gua sha colour can be striking, but it is not a medical diagnosis. Context and your skin response matter more than matching a picture.
The redness or purple speckling left after gua sha tends to grab attention, and some sources try to read meaning into every shade. A photograph of someone's back, though, cannot explain their health. Traditional interpretations of colour belong to a particular way of thinking and should be kept separate from a medical diagnosis, which relies on proper clinical assessment and, where needed, tests.
Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, prefers to treat skin colour as one small observation rather than a verdict.

Before gua sha is considered, let Christine know if you have bruising you cannot explain, skin that tears or marks easily, or a new rash. Some of these signs call for a check with your GP before any hands-on treatment.
Ask how firmly Christine intends to work and how she will keep an eye on your skin during and after the session. The aim is a sensible decision about care, not producing a particular shade to match an image.
Before booking another session, tell Christine about any tenderness that hung around, irritation or bruising that seemed more than expected. The tool and technique should be picked for your circumstances rather than for the colour shown in a photograph. Christine can then decide with you whether to go ahead, change the method or try another option.
Skin that has not settled is a good reason to wait a little longer between sessions.
Mention, too, whether you take medicines that thin the blood, as these can change how the skin responds.
If an online chart has left you wondering what your own marks might mean, bring it along. Christine is happy to discuss traditional ideas and their limits at the Lane Cove clinic, and to explain what she looks for when deciding whether gua sha suits you.
