Wei Qi: The Body's Defensive Shield

Wei Qi (pronounced 'way chee') is the body's defensive Qi — the energetic equivalent of the immune system. It circulates on the surface of the body and in the respiratory tract, protecting against external pathogens ('wind, cold, and heat' in TCM terms — viruses and bacteria in modern language).

When Wei Qi is strong, the body repels pathogens efficiently. When it is depleted by overwork, poor sleep, stress, or poor diet, illness enters and takes hold.

Acupuncture for Immune Support

Regular acupuncture during winter has been shown to:

  • Increase NK (natural killer) cell activity
  • Enhance T-lymphocyte and B-lymphocyte function
  • Regulate inflammatory cytokines
  • Strengthen Lung and Spleen Qi (foundational to immune function)
  • Improve sleep quality, which is critical for immune regulation

Herbal Medicine for Immunity

Chinese herbal medicine offers powerful immune support. Key formulas include:

  • Yu Ping Feng San (Jade Windscreen): The classic immune-strengthening formula — taken preventatively throughout winter
  • Huang Qi (Astragalus): Adaptogenic immune tonic, well-researched for NK cell activation
  • Yin Chiao Jie Du Pian: Taken at the first sign of cold or sore throat to prevent progression

Lifestyle Recommendations for Winter

We advise patients to cover the back of the neck (a key entry point for wind-cold pathogens), keep the lower back warm, prioritise sleep over 8pm, eat warming cooked foods, and reduce cold drinks and raw foods that burden the digestive system — TCM's engine of Qi production.

The best time to treat winter illness is before winter begins — invest in Wei Qi now and let your body do the work.

Research Note

A 2020 randomised study found patients receiving weekly acupuncture over 12 weeks had significantly higher NK cell counts and reduced incidence of upper respiratory tract infections compared to a non-treatment control group.
