Understanding Menopause Through TCM

In Chinese medicine, menopause is viewed as a natural depletion of Kidney Yin and Jing — the cooling, nourishing reserves that have been drawn upon through the reproductive years. When Kidney Yin declines, relative Kidney Yang becomes excessive, rising as heat and disturbing the Heart (manifesting as anxiety, palpitations, and insomnia).

Symptoms Acupuncture Can Address

Clinical research and patient experience both support acupuncture for a wide range of menopausal symptoms:

  • Hot flushes and night sweats
  • Sleep disturbance and fatigue
  • Anxiety, irritability, and low mood
  • Brain fog and poor concentration
  • Vaginal dryness and low libido
  • Joint aches and muscle tension
  • Urinary frequency or urgency

Treatment Approach

Treatment nourishes Kidney Yin, clears empty heat, calms the Heart and settles the Shen (spirit). Points are selected from the Kidney, Heart, and Pericardium meridians, combined with ear acupuncture which has demonstrated particular efficacy for hot flushes in research settings.

Working Alongside Your GP

Acupuncture integrates well with HRT, antidepressants, or lifestyle measures your GP may recommend. We encourage open communication with your healthcare team and can provide treatment summaries if needed.

Menopause is not a deficiency to be fixed — it is a transition to be navigated with wisdom and the right support.

Evidence Snapshot

A randomised trial in Menopause (2022) found acupuncture reduced hot flush frequency by 36% over 8 weeks, with participants also reporting significant improvements in sleep quality and mood compared to a sham control group.
