The Science and History of Moxa
Mugwort has been burned near acupuncture points for over 3,000 years. The gentle penetrating heat of moxa stimulates circulation, warms the meridians, and strengthens Yang Qi — the body's warming and activating force.
Modern research suggests moxa emits far-infrared radiation that penetrates deeply into tissue, stimulates microcirculation, and activates heat-sensitive receptors that mediate anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects.
Conditions Treated with Moxibustion
Moxa is indicated for cold-pattern conditions and deficiency states:
- Cold extremities and poor circulation
- Digestive weakness — IBS, loose stools, poor appetite
- Fertility support — particularly luteal phase deficiency
- Breech presentation in late pregnancy (Moxa on BL67)
- Arthritis worsened by cold and damp weather
- Immune deficiency and frequent colds
- Fatigue and chronic tiredness
Types of Moxibustion
We use several moxa modalities depending on the condition:
- Direct moxa: Small moxa cones placed directly on acupuncture points
- Indirect moxa: Moxa stick held above points — most common and comfortable
- Moxa on needle: Moxa affixed to the handle of an inserted needle
- Box moxa: Wooden box with moxa burned inside placed on the abdomen or back
Breech Baby and Moxibustion
Moxa on acupuncture point Bladder 67 (at the outer corner of the little toe) has been used for centuries to encourage a breech baby to turn. Multiple studies have found moxa at BL67, combined with positional techniques, improves cephalic presentation rates compared to expectant management.
We recommend this treatment between 33–36 weeks gestation, taught as a home practice for daily use.
Where there is cold, moxa brings warmth. Where there is stagnation, it restores flow. Where there is deficiency, it nourishes.
Research Highlight
A landmark RCT in JAMA (Cardini & Weixin, 1998) found moxibustion at BL67 during weeks 33–35 of pregnancy increased cephalic presentation by 75.4% compared to 62.6% in controls, with the treatment group experiencing significantly more fetal movements during sessions.
